Performative Walk – The Jacobin Fox was here!
10:15 am - 1:15 pm

In the summer of 1797, the ‘most dangerous man in Britain’: that Jacobin fox’, John Thelwall, came to stay in the Stroud area. This was after leaving London, pursued by William Pitt’s spies, to spend ten days with Coleridge and Wordsworth at Nether Stowey. He not only talked politics with the poets, but influenced the Lyrical Ballads, too.
During his timet here he stayed with sympathetic local clothiers and dyers, with visits to Uley, Nailsworth, Chalford and Bowbridge. He talked politics; he walked; he wrote lyrical poems.
Radical Stroud recreates his visit to Chalford and Bowbridge with a performative walk on Friday October 11th.
Meet at the bus stop in Chalford at 10.15am, near the Lavender Bakehouse (public transport available on the 54 bus to Cirencester – please check timetable). If driving, please be considerate with your parking.
Allow 3 hours for the walk – ending with refreshment at the Upper Lock Cafe at Wallbridge, Stroud.
